On Friday, June 1, The Houston Zoo welcomed over 600 very special guests for an unforgettable evening of fun. The reason for this event, called Dreamnight, was to give chronically ill and disabled children an opportunity to have an entrance fee-free evening just for themselves and their families. This year was the Zoo’s 8th year to host Dreamnight.
Activities during the evening included keeper chats, face painting, crafts, music, a photo booth, special guest appearances, and more. Delicious refreshments were also provided to be sure guests were full, happy, and hydrated. Each family received a goodie bag stuffed to the brim with fun toys and gifts. And, of course, the whole zoo was open so everyone could see their favorite animal!
Dreamnight isn’t only a Houston Zoo event: there are 248 zoos around the world that participate on the exact same day each year, including zoos in Europe, Japan, Ecuador, Israel, and South Africa. Zoos partner with area hospitals and organizations, where medical staff select children that are well enough to attend.
The idea for Dreamnight started at Rotterdam Zoo in The Netherlands in 1996, and it has grown every year since then. Last year, over 85,000 families around the world received free admission and enjoyed a carefree evening at the zoo.
The Houston Zoo extends a very warm thank you to everyone who helped out with this year’s event, including Catch the Moment Photography, Frown Busters of Grace Presbyterian Church, the Houston Texans, Sodexo, the Houston Astros, the Houston Dynamo, Kroger, Red Door Productions, and United – the Official Airline of the Houston Zoo as well as Houston Zoo volunteers and staff. A special thank you goes to Toni and Noel Noble, two dedicated Zoo volunteers who worked so hard to make Dreamnight an evening to remember.
