Zoo Friends of Houston, Inc. visited the Houston Zoo Tuesday, September 4 for a very special purpose. This support group, formed in 1969, presented the Zoo with a donation of $323,447.07 in proceeds from their 2012 Zoo Ball-Viva Zoo Vegas! fundraiser held in April. Cindi Scruggs, Lynnae Luskus, and Patti Henry, this year’s Ball Chairs presented the check to Zoo President Deborah Cannon and Zoo Director Rick Barongi on behalf of the many Zoo Friends volunteers who make the fundraiser a possibility. Zoo Friends President Diane Cain noted this newest contribution brings their cumulative donations to the Houston Zoo to nearly $26 million.
Since its inception, the Zoo Friends of Houston have supported the growth and continual improvements of the Houston Zoo. Their significant donations have helped acquire new animals to expand the Zoo’s collection as well as updating and adding habitats for the Zoo’s animals and supporting the Zoo’s innovative education and conservation programs. There are few Houstonians who haven’t been touched by the generosity of Zoo Friends to the community through their commitment to the Houston Zoo.
