Earth Day 2013 at the Houston Zoo

Posted by in Events,Featured,Zoo News

April 22 is Earth Day, and here at The Houston Zoo we’ll be celebrating on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.  Started in 1970, Earth Day is a day that raises awareness of ways we can protect our planet.  Earth Day is important because it reminds us to take action now and protect our environment before it’s too late.

At the Houston Zoo, every day is Earth Day.  One major focus we have: Recycling. We take recycling seriously.  Not only does our staff recycle, but we encourage our guests to recycle as well by placing recycling bins throughout the Zoo.  Over the past two years over 90 tons of recycling has been collected – that’s equal to 30 female adult Asian elephants!

Did you know you can recycle your old cell phone? There is a cell phone collection bin (chargers and batteries can also be dropped off) located near the main gift shop.  Recycling your phone at the Zoo today will not only ensure it is reused or properly disposed of, but can also help gorillas!  Read more about how cell phones are linked to gorillas in the wild here. Plus, proceeds from our cell phone recycling program benefit the Zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts.

We are always looking for new ways to be environmentally friendly. What can we all do to help our environment?  Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!  It’s as easy as 1,2,3.

1. Reduce

Reducing our intake of certain products can dramatically help our environment.  We can reduce our use of paper and plastic shopping bags by using reusable shopping bags.  Over a lifetime, use of reusable bags by just one person takes the place of over 22,000 plastic bags. Also, instead of buying cases of bottled water, use re-usable lightweight aluminum-constructive water bottles.  If everybody stopped using plastic water bottles we can put an end to the nearly 18,834,000,000 bottles that end up in landfills each year (that’s in the U.S. alone!).  We can also reduce our energy consumption by carpooling with friends to work or school and by doing something as simple as unplugging your cell phone charger when it is not being used.

2. Reuse

In addition to re-usable shopping bags and water bottles, you can also donate items that you no longer need or want. Items such as clothing, toys, and electronics can be dropped off at consignment shops or thrift stores.  Another way we can reuse is by purchasing used items like books and cars. Take silverware and a reusable cup to work and cut down on your use of plastic cutlery.  Borrow, rent, or share items that are used infrequently, like party decorations or tools.  All of these actions put together can help us waste less.

3. Recycle

Do you know all the things that can be recycled?  Recycling can be done in the following areas:  paper, plastic, metal, compost, oil, batteries, electronics, glass, and tires.  By recycling not only do we reduce waste, we also save energy. Recycling requires less energy than creating new products made from raw materials.  Recycling also reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change and, most importantly, it helps sustain the environment for future generations for humans and animals alike.

This Earth Day we challenge you to take these three steps to preserve our beautiful Earth and to spread the word.  What changes will you take on?  How will you make every day Earth Day?  If we all work together, we can make a difference and create a better tomorrow.

The Houston Zoo welcomed guest number 2,000,000 shortly after Noon today, Friday November 21.

Lucky guests are Jill and David Thornton who were visiting the the Zoo with their grandchildren – Aidan, Jagger, and Jada from Corpus Christi.

And yes, they were surprised!

Jill and David will receive a Houston Zoo membership (grandparent level so the grandkids can join them at the Zoo when they’re visiting) and the honor of Zoo Director for a Day!

On a day of their choosing in 2013, Jill and David and the grand kids will be treated to a guided Zoo tour, a behind the scenes experience, 4D Experience tickets, Wildlife Carousel tickets and lunch.

Congratulations to Jill and David Thornton and Aidan, Jagger, and Jada! Thank you for helping us celebrate an attendance landmark – the 2,000,000th Houston Zoo guest in 2012.

The Best Light Show Uptown, Downtown, All Around

Posted by in Events

By now, you’ve probably heard that we’re mixing it up for the holidays; and if you’ve heard that, then you’ve probably heard that we have a ton of lights; and if you’ve heard that then you’ve probably heard that the lights are all super energy efficient LED’s and that the whole thing is called TXU Energy Presents Zoo Lights; and if you’ve heard that, then you’re a great listener and I’m kind of impressed.

So in order to prevent your holiday blood pressure from being as high as your holiday credit card balance, I’ve drafted up a couple tips to make the Zoo Lights journey easier on you.

Official Tip: Buy your ticket online to save $1 and spend less time in line.
What this means to you: more money  + more time =  more time eating funnel cakes. Scientific studies have found that funnel cakes = happiness. (Source: stomach full of funnel cakes)

Official Tip: Zoo Lights is open 6pm – 10pm, with the last ticket sold at 9pm
What this means to you: You won’t miss anything if you show up at 7 or 8. Zoo Lights is busier right when the gates open at 6pm. Probably because everyone is so excited about the funnel cakes …errr…Zoo Lights.

Official tip: On Friday and Saturday nights, a free Zoo Lights trolley will run from Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza garage to the Zoo.
What this means to you: Can’t find a parking spot? Don’t waste time circling the parking lot like a Nascar track. Try the other garage.

Official tip: During Zoo Lights, all entry (and exit) will be directed through the main entrance at the front of the Zoo.
What this means to you: The Zoo is directing people just like an 80′s mullet haircut – business in the front, party in the back.

That’s all of the tips that I have for now. If you need further information, there is an entire webpage for TXU Energy Presents Zoo Lights .

Signing off from the Houston Zoo, your funnel cake expert,

-Ryan

This weekend, Saturday June 23 and Sunday June 24, the Houston Zoo will be celebrating Pollinators Day.  There will be booths, keeper chats and activities for the kids.

The Naturally Wild Swap Shop will join in the fun.  Any nature journal on pollinators or pollination will get double points!  Topics can include (but are not limited to) bats , bees, butterflies, or the plants that they pollinate.  Journals might also cover the many  products collected or manufactured thanks to the hard work of these and other pollinators.  Don’t know about the Naturally Wild Swap Shop?  Click here for more information.

Pollinators help us with many products from honey to tequila.  They provide something for everyone.  Some Pollinators are at risk and their numbers are dwindling.

Come join us for Pollinators Weekend and learn more about these amazing animals.

Frown Busters

"Frown Busters" Entertain Guests at Dreamnight

On Friday, June 1, The Houston Zoo welcomed over 600 very special guests for an unforgettable evening of fun.   The reason for this event, called Dreamnight, was to give chronically ill and disabled children an opportunity to have an entrance fee-free  evening just for themselves and their families.   This year was the Zoo’s 8th year to host Dreamnight.

Activities during the evening included keeper chats, face painting, crafts, music, a photo booth, special guest appearances, and more.  Delicious refreshments were also provided to be sure guests were full, happy, and hydrated.  Each family received a goodie bag stuffed to the brim with fun toys and gifts.  And, of course, the whole zoo was open so everyone could see their favorite animal!

Dreamnight isn’t only a Houston Zoo event: there are 248 zoos around the world that participate on the exact same day each year, including zoos in Europe, Japan, Ecuador, Israel, and South Africa.  Zoos partner with area hospitals and organizations, where medical staff select children that are well enough to attend.

Dreamnight Guests Feed the Giraffes

The idea for Dreamnight started at Rotterdam Zoo in The Netherlands in 1996, and it has grown every year since then.  Last year, over 85,000 families around the world received free admission and enjoyed a carefree evening at the zoo.

The Houston Zoo extends a very warm thank you to everyone who helped out with this year’s event, including Catch the Moment Photography, Frown Busters of Grace Presbyterian Church, the Houston Texans, Sodexo, the Houston Astros, the Houston Dynamo, Kroger, Red Door Productions, and United – the Official Airline of the Houston Zoo as well as Houston Zoo volunteers and staff.  A special thank you goes to Toni and Noel Noble, two dedicated Zoo volunteers who worked so hard to make Dreamnight an evening to remember.
