12 Days of Grub: Day 11 – Eleven Meerkats Mobbing

Posted by in Holidays,Natural Encounters,Supporting Your Zoo

On the Eleventh Day of Grub, your zoo gift will help to feed…Eleven Meerkats Mobbing, Ten Chimps a Chasing, Nine Fruit Bats Flying, Eight Giraffes a Galloping, Seven Snakes a Slithering, Six Mole-rats Mining, Five Golden Frogs, Four Calling Birds, Three Wild Dogs, Two Grizzly Bears, and Darwin the Cassowary! CLICK HERE to read them all!

One of the most popular exhibits at the Houston Zoo is our meerkat yard. Located just outside the entrance to the Carruth Natural Encounters building, the meerkats are fun to watch as they go about their lives. And if you need a break from walking, the benches are a great place to sit and watch them.

Meerkats are small, African mammals related to the mongoose. They live in groups called “mobs,” which can have up to 40 meerkats, but it is more common for a mob to have 10 to 15 individuals. There is an alpha pair which includes the dominate members of the mob responsible for reproduction. When there is a new litter, each meerkat contributes to caring for the young by helping to find food, digging new burrows, and even babysitting the new litter. Acting as a lookout, called sentry, is another important job for meerkats. A sentry helps to protect the colony by looking out for predators and will sound the alarm if any threat is present.

In the wild, a meerkat will eat mostly insects, but it will also catch and eat reptiles, birds and other small mammals. A mob will even work together to catch venomous snakes and other larger prey.  The meerkats at the Houston Zoo love spending their days digging new burrows, exploring their enrichment, play wrestling with each other and sunbathing on exhibit. The next time you’re at the Houston Zoo, take a few minutes to enjoy the antics of the meerkats. Our meerkat yard is definitely an exhibit that is fun to see again and again!

Animal Enrichment: Yummy for the Tummy

Posted by in Enrichment: Keeping it Interesting,Events

The Commissary at the Houston Zoo works like a five star restaurant!  The staff prepare animal diets daily, consisting of fresh produce, fruits, meats and an assortment of many other foods.  But who doesn’t like a special treat now and then….many of the animals certainly do and the Commissary makes sure they get a favorite treat.

Some of those treats are also part of the animal’s enrichment.  Those include ice pops, from 8 oz cups to 5 gallons!!

Now, I know you’re thinking who would get a 5 gallon ice pop!!!  Those lucky animals would be the bears and the elephant herd.  The bear’s pops are filled with fish or fruit.  The elephants’ pops are fruit filled with apples, pineapple, pears, mangos and grapes.

Primates get the smaller ice pops.  Their pops contain fruit juices and another item such as currants, sunflower seeds, grapes, etc.  Here’s a picture of Rudi enjoying his ice pop, although it looks like he’s dreaming of a 5 gallon ice pop!

The Carnivores enjoy an assortment of bones once a month.  Watch the video below, they really seem to love stalking and capturing their “prey”.

Holiday food enrichment is also something different for the animals.  Putting something new and different in their habitat helps to enrich their lives by finding something unexpected, something unknown.  One of those items is pumpkins at Halloween.  Most animals receive pumpkins and have a great time playing and foraging through them.  Watch the Meerkat search for yummy treats in their pumpkin.

Enrichment Day at the Houston Zoo is Saturday, September 24th.  This is a great opportunity to come and join in the fun.  Come out and see all of the animals enjoying special enrichment, hear keeper chats and loads of  fun games for kids of all ages!  Enrichment Day celebrates the meaning and joy of enriching our animals and visitors!

Find your favorite animals and see what they’re wishing for at Amazon.com. Then just sit back, shop, click and send your animal of choice a wonderful gift to enrich their life!  They really do appreciate it and so does the Houston Zoo!

Give the Gift of Grub: Duplicating Nature

Posted by in Feeding Our Animals,Reptiles

The Houston Zoo is kicking off our holiday fundraising campaign – the Gift of Grub — to help defray the costs of caring for our animals and provide everything we need to keep them healthy and happy in 2011! This is a fun, new blog series that will tell the story of exactly what it takes to feed our furry, finned and fanged friends here at the Houston Zoo.

In the commissary, besides all the produce we work with, we deal with lots of what’s known as feeder animals.  In the wild, while some animals, called herbivores, feed only on vegetation, some also eat insects and other animals (omnivores), while other species exist exclusively on meat (carnivores). To maintain optimum health, providing feeder animals is necessary. It occurs in nature, so it needs to occur here at the Zoo, where we, along with the keepers and our vet team, are committed to ensuring the best diet for each animal’s specific needs.

Did you know we use 98,750 of rodents per year? We get mice and rats in different sizes, from 10 to 300 grams. Our large rodent order is delivered on Tuesday. These mice and rats are raised in a controlled environment and are disease free. We also obtain rabbits for are larger bird of prey, larger boas and pythons and at times some of our large cats.

Smaug, our komodo dragon, with an enriching feast

Throughout the year the Zoo holds special events and during that time we also have goat carcasses. Most recently, at our Feast for the Beasts event, our African lions and our Komodo dragon, enjoyed this special meal.

We also use 18 million crickets, which also come in sizes from pinheads (newly hatched) to adult size crickets. Meerkats and reptiles thrive on them.  Birds, lizards, slow loris, marmosets, tamarins and other small mammals also eat crickets…. but during the months of April, May, June and July our biggest users of crickets are the Houston toads (there will be a whole blog post coming soon on those!).

Cricket chart

Our crickets come from our supplier on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The delivery driver  has made comments a few times of escaped crickets in the back of the truck!

Next time I will talk about more food items bought at the store that are used to supplement animal diets.

Written by Phyllis Pietrucha-Mays, Commissary Supervisor

We’re reaching out to all Zoo lovers to make a year-end, tax-deductible donation at www.houstonzoo.org/gift-of-grub. You can also donate easily via our CONTRIBUTE tab on Facebook! Email development@houstonzoo.org for more information

Our Meerkat Mob says Thank You!

Our thanks to Petco for the cricket chart
